Composer’s Note

Inherent was born organically, without force. The beginning of this piece was born from recording myself humming, and because there are no strict rules or beats to follow while humming, I let the piece take its course naturally. This resulted in the first section, which with its crescendos and decrescendos, mimics taking and releasing breaths. Entrances of instruments that aren’t on the strong beats emphasizes its organic nature. The “breaths” then start to blossom and then settle into the next section, which features a more constant pulse, creating a more orderly but still organic feeling with the swelling of dynamics in the strings. From this the main melody emerges after a key change from E-flat Major to E Major, floating higher first in the upper registers. It leads the listener on until it settles back to E-flat Major and into the familiar breathing of the first section, but this time accompanied and reinforced by traces of the main melody. This piece reflects the mellow nature of my personality, conveying a sense of purity and calm that comes from internal reflection and contentment. These qualities feel inherent, a natural part of the essence of being.
